Style up your wardrobe with a few key pieces from ASOS this season! With new products added to the site every day and handy edits to shop, you’ll be ready to step out in style this season.

Three key trends to look out for are…

1. Denim
You heard it, from denim jackets to dungarees and to (dare we say it) double denim. Find yourself some vintage Levi’s and customise those bad boys!

2. Lilac
Lilac is the colour to be seen in, luckily lilac tones well with denim, so it’s a win-win situation, stylin’ from head to toe.

3. Camping shoes
The Birkenstock made a big comeback last year, a versatile shoe that can be teamed with almost anything for a chilled out summer vibe.

Check out this laid back look we’ve put together from our favourite pieces on the ASOS site.

What’s that you say? Guilt-free shopping? When you shop at ASOS via Give as you Live, 1.5% of your spend will be donated to your chosen charity – at no extra cost!

birkenstock

We love the denim dungaree dress, a great go-to to throw over a relaxed tee. This teamed up with some Birkenstocks and a pastel backpack creates the perfect outfit for running errands, drinks in the pub garden and day trips! Put on some red lipstick to add a pop of colour if you’re feeling brave!

What’s your go-to S/S outfit? Let us know in the comments below…

The nights are getting lighter but ever so slowly. There are still a good few weeks of dim evenings to contend with before spring has sprung and the weather warms up enough to get outside after work or school. Look at the positives, though, as it can feel really cosy snuggling up inside on those dark nights. But if you’re still struggling to see the cheer in that thought, splash out on a great new lamp for your home. Get the shopping buzz from buying a beautiful standard lamp to stand proud in your living space and then enjoy the new-found relaxing atmosphere it creates. Here are a few ideas to get your fingers twitching towards your credit card.

lighting

Enjoy the warmth of a Mediterranean evening with the help of a Sardinia Floor Lamp in antique brass. The beauty of this lamp is not necessarily in its design but in its unobtrusiveness. It can create a warm or romantic atmosphere – or simply help you to read your book – without taking up too much space or detracting from other items in your room. At completely the other end of the scale is the white It’s About Romi Hollywood Floor Lamp from John Lewis. This is a lamp that demands attention – just like the biggest Hollywood names. The lighting it offers is actually subtler than its styling may suggest, and its adjustable nature is handy for home. There’s no denying, however, that this is only a choice for a specifically styled room. A Hollywood lamp in the corner of a traditional room would be as out of place as Jean Claude van Damme in a Shakespeare play.

If you like the tripod look but you want to go more Habitat than Hollywood, check out the Tripod Ash Floor Lamp Base and adorn with the lampshade of your choice. If the natural-wood look floats your boat, you could check out the Navy Tripod Floor Lamp from Made.com. It’s subtly stylish without going overboard.

Dressing up in school uniform over the age of 18 is usually called fancy dress rather than fashion, but if you want to be top of the fashion class, it’s time to go back to school. Don’t worry, though, as you don’t have to end up looking like an extra from a Britney Spears video (unless you want to, of course). There are plenty of more ‘grown-up’ options that will give you class without you having to spend the day pulling up knee-high socks and rolling down the waistband on your nylon skirt.

The new school of thought is that you can go uniform in glossy trench coats, flirty kilts and snuggly cricket jumpers (if you can stand the heat). Stick to one item and you’ll look stylish rather than strange, and keep away from satchels and Mary Janes at all costs. Sizing is also important. If you’re going for a kilt, don’t go too short or too tight or you might just end up looking like mutton dressed as Larry the
Lamb – or Shaun the Sheep, for those of you young enough to get away with this style. A good choice is the House Of Hackney for ASOS Kilt in Tartan Check.

When it comes to cricket jumpers, go for slouchy and loose. Check out the White Contrast Stripe Cricket Jumper at New Look.

For a really subtle slant on the school-girl look, just grab yourself a blazer, such as the really versatile Zip-Off Blazer from Topshop. Dress up or down, or even wear it to work. You could also go for a trench coat, as Burberry did on the catwalk. If you can’t afford to splash out hundreds, try out Dorothy Perkins’ Black Crepe Trench Coat for size.

If you’ve fallen off the healthy-eating wagon harder than a bag of apples being thrown from an ice cream van, why not simply move house – or even better, move town? Up sticks and head to Dorchester in Dorset, which has just been named as Britain’s most health-conscious place.

fresh-produce

The best news of all is that this isn’t because the residents spend every spare minute in the gym or pounding the pavements – it’s because they eat a lot! We know some of you are already packing your bags and planning your trip to Dorchester, so we’d better tell you all the facts. The residents of Dorset’s county town don’t spend their days gorging on McDonalds (although the ones nearby are always really full). They’re actually the people most likely to fill their supermarket trolleys – more specifically, their Tesco supermarket trolleys – with fruit and veg. A study by the supermarket giant discovered that it was in Dorchester where people most regularly bought vegetables and fruit.

If you’d rather have a melon than a Mars or a kiwi over Quavers, you now know where to go. You could also plan a healthy trip to Taunton in Somerset, which came second in Tesco’s most health-conscious list. Next in line was Redhill in Surrey, followed by Cambridge and then Hemel Hempstead. Tesco created the UK map of vegetable- and fruit-eating habits after analysing data collected from stores over a year. Now who says big businesses don’t spend their cash on worthwhile causes?

There are still a good few weeks before Mother’s Day on March 15, and so there’s plenty of time to get your orders in for those personalised gifts. Nothing will say ‘I love you’ better than a gift with her name written all over it – or a great big bottle of gin just for her.

happy-mothers-day

If your mum has trouble remembering everyone’s name (and let’s face it, that baby brain can last for years), then give her a helping hand with a Personalised Family Names Heart Necklace by Posh Totty Designs. There are three rings to personalise, and if your mum has more children than that, then you’ll just have to buy her more than one.

The Dear Mum – From You to Me Book is more a do-it-yourself personalised affair that your traditional engraved photo frame or picture book, but it’s such a good idea that it is well worth a mention. The book contains around 60 questions for your mum to answer, and then you get to learn a thing or two about the most important woman in your life. Now how’s that for a keepsake?

mothers-day-gift-collage

If you think your mum has had more than enough of answering questions for you during your life, how about getting her to put her feet up and relax against a plumped up Heart Of The Home Personalised Cushion, complete with your own personal message? The chances are she won’t be resting for long, and even if she’s determined to get back in the kitchen this Mother’s Day, make sure she does it in style wearing her very own Personalised Queen of the Kitchen Apron.

If you’ve already volunteered to do the cooking, help to keep her busy with a 400-piece Best Mum Sand Castle Jigsaw Puzzle. Or you could simply let her crack open her own Personalised Gin Gift Set, or sit back with some bubbles from a bottle of Personalised Gauthier Champagne.

]]>
Pregnancy can be a confusing period, and constant changes in advice and guidance don’t help at all. Mind you, at least the latest guidelines on drinking in pregnancy should offer some clarity during the first three months – at least for now. Gone is the airy-fairy advice that it’s safe to drink a couple of units a couple of times a week. It’s been replaced by updated Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) guidance to steer clear of booze during the first trimester.

The latest advice says that small amounts of booze after the first three months do not seem to cause any harm, but the only sure-fire way of keeping youngsters safe is to steer clear of alcohol completely. There is still the door left open for moderate drinking, though, with the RCOG’s chair of the patient information committee, Philippa Marsden, saying that women can drink lightly after the first trimester. So complete clarity has not been achieved, although it’s clear that there are currently no proven safe amounts that can be drunk during pregnancy, as well as no clear indications if any damage is caused at all by light alcohol consumption. The only real answer, then, seems to be to try to stay informed and then make a personal choice.

pregnant-woman-wine

This can still be hard, however, given the constant changes in advice. In 2010, for example, a study by the department of epidemiology and public health at University College London seemed to offer reassurance to women who enjoyed the occasional drink during their pregnancy. On the other hand, pregnant women are bombarded with horror stories about the effects that booze can have on their unborn child. There seems no doubt that excessive alcohol consumption can have severe consequences for babies. There is a proven link between premature labour, foetal growth restrictions and still births. There is also the risk of severe disorders such as foetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) and the even more serious foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), which can result in both mental and physical disabilities. It’s clear that you shouldn’t down a bottle of wine, but ow about a glass every now and again? Now that’s the question.

At least the latest RCOG guidance now chimes more coherently with the existing Nice antenatal guidelines. That’s at least one less case of conflicting advice to deal with, although it seems that common sense is still more valuable in making decisions than relying solely on supposed facts that will probably be ‘revised’ again before a woman’s baby has been born.
